The Big East appears to have hit a home run with the hiring of CBS’ popular Executive Vice President for Sports Mike Aresco as its new commissioner.

The conference will reportedly pay Aresco over $1 million dollars to rehab an ailing conference that has constantly been raided by other conferences since 2004 and still does not have a TV deal in place.

Longtime Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese, retired since 2009, said he was not involved in the decision but is “ecstatic” over the hiring.

“I’ve known Mike a long time. I think he’s talented. He’s bright. He’s got incredible people skills. He’ll be a great person for people in the office to work with,” Tranghese told Sporting News.

“In a business where honesty at times is not in great supply, I would tell you that I negotiated a bunch of contracts with Mike, and they were difficult but always fair and direct. He’s very detail-oriented. He knows everybody in the college landscape...

“He knows everybody in the television business. Mike is one of those guys that just has great people skills. Despite operating in a world where you have to negotiate and go back and forth across the table, Mike has always been able to maintain great relationships with people.”

The Big East on Tuesday hired CBS executive vice president Mike Aresco as it continues to rebuild from a tumultuous year of defections.

"I'm not daunted by it all. I embrace the challenge," Aresco told the AP in a telephone interview. "I would not be on the sidelines. I believe the reconstituted conference really has vast potential."


The conference is in the middle of a massive membership overhaul and will begin crucial negotiations on a new television contract in September.

"It would be hard to overstate it," Aresco said of the importance of the next TV contract. "I consider it job one. All eyes are going to be on it. I'm not making any predictions, but I'm very confident our value is going to be recognized and maximized."

"We did discuss it. There is some risk," CBS Sports Chairman Sean McManus said in a phone interview. "Obviously the conference is serious about being aggressive and protecting its brand, protecting its makeup and protecting its participants."

I will be the first to admit that I don't know my college conference commissioners at all, but WOW, this seems like an amazing grab! When you read down through the comments posted by various national writers, it suddenly seems as if the Big East has become very important indeed. How we scored this is beyond me, but how huge could this turn out to be? Go Cats and Go Big East!

This will be a home run hire if and only if he can negotiate a TV deal nearing or exceeding that of the ACC. Without this kind of money the Big East will continue to be an afterthought in the realm of big boy college football.
