I went over to Woodward tonight to see who would show up to play for Slats. When the game started, there were no UC frosh in the building. Sean Kilpatrick and Anthony McBride teamed up with three non-UC players, two of which were very small guards.
Kilpatrick is really quick and can take the ball to the rim. He forced a few outside shots, but he's a good shooter. Kilpatrick went 9 for 10 from the line, with the only miss just rimming out. It's obvious that UC's weight and conditioning program has him in great shape. He's very strong for a wing. McBride (Yancy Gates's brother) is a walk-on, but far from a stiff. It's unlikely that he'll see any meaningful floor time during the season, but he may be the most talented walk-on since Brent Petrus. With four minutes to go before the half, Justin Jackson showed up. He's maybe 6'7" and slender; pretty athletic. Jackson needs to hit the weights. He showed a very good first step on drives, but was knocked off his path by defenders, causing him to miss a few chippies. He's a keeper, though. His playing time is unlikely to be very much if Darnell Wilks' development continues, as he showed toward the end of last season. Slats had an eight-point lead with about seven minutes to go and collapsed, eventually losing by ten. They got very sloppy and, once they fell behind, started jacking up poor shots. |

I went to check out the summer league today, and here are some notes on the Bearcats guys:
Sean Kilpatrick - as mentioned before, he's a gamer and a scorer. Yes, it remains to be seen how he translates to real games in the Big East and as a first year player, but I do think he's a better scorer than anyone on last years team besides Lance. He creates, gets to the rim and can shoot. But the most important thing I think he has is game confidence - he wants the ball. Other than Lance, practically no one has possessed this quality in Mick's tenure. Justin Jackson - although I admit to being one of those who was underwhelmed by his signing...he impressed me very much! He's lean, but he's got a LOT of bounce in his step. For a big man, he's VERY agile and aggressive. He can score it. Needs to get some muscle. It's summer league, so there really isn't a post game being played, so it's hard to evaluate his true post skills. Blocked a couple shots - and has the same confidence factor as Killa. I was very surprised and impressed - looks to be a great find by Mick (but we'll see...I know). Deonta - well he's graduated, as we know...but he didn't look very good. If I didn't know who he was, I would've thought he was one of these random local guys out there. I appreciate everything he did for the program, but I think he was the leading scorer by default - not because of his talent. I think addition by subtraction with DV this year. Anthony McBride got hurt within the first couple minutes of the game. Ice on his ankle. Dion Dixon - he doesn't play on the Slats. Played as the same old Dion...stroked a 3 or two...bricked some others. Gets to the rim a lot. Messes up easy plays a lot. A valuable player and one of the best guys on the court in this Summer League. Seems to fit the mold of a very good reserve player in the Big East. No more. No Less. He is who he is. Yancy Gates - came almost at halftime. Looks lighter and quicker and seemed to be having lots of fun out there. (****, any expression from him is a step in the right direction). Played solid, threw some dunks down. Hard to evaluate post men in the Summer League, but he looks good. As noted above, I think some of these younger guys have a confidence about them that a winning team needs. We've lacked that for a long time. It'll be interesting to see how they pan out...but Sean Killa and JJ look very promising. I feel much better about this upcoming season than I did a few months ago...but yes, I know...we'll see when the season starts. |

Keep in mind that Sean is not a "young guy". I know that he is a red shirt freshman but he is 20 or 21 years old. I hope he brings that maturity to the court this year.

After reading your evaluations of the players in the Deveroes Summer League I feel more confident about next season. I wonder how Darnell and Biggie look and if they are playing in the summer league.

I saw Biggie in a box score. Don't remember about Darnell.

Summer league performances are not an indicator of success in the upcoming season. It is merely a recreational activity for the players involved.

No kidding. however some of us who actually watch basketball know there are definately leading indicators within the games. Such as conditioning...

Does Biggie look like he has added any muscle and gained any weight since last basketball season?

i went over yesterday and saw the last two games. biggie actually knocked down about 3 or 4 jumpers from 10 to 15 feet. however, his footwork is still suspect particularly on the dfensive end. rashad bishop was playing against sean kilpatrick which was an interesting matchup. kilpatrick plays on the same team as terrill holloway. kilpatrick can definitely score. i think he is a better overall shooter than lance is, but he doesn't pass the ball as well. he can hit ft's as well. he will need to score for sure this year.

No one has mentioned Rashad being there. I guess the fact that he's playing would indicate that he'll be back.

Cronin said today that Bishop is on a 6-week plan to get back on the team and that he is doing well but isn't there yet. Also said that his scholarship was not renewed but could be renewed based on the results of this plan. Said we would know in probably August before the Canadian tournament.

I would prefer if they didn't. I wish they would either stop playing in the league on their own, or for the staff to pull the plug on them playing in it.

Sean Kilpatrick has played every game. Walk-on Anthony McBride is injured. Those are the only two "returning" players permitted to play on SLATS. Justin Jackson has played a few times, but wasn't there last night. The only other potential UC player would be Kelvin Gaines. There's no word whether he's even in town.
